Indian cinema popularly knows as bollywood is the second largest film making industry after hollywood in the world and has seen many up and down in this long journey from the year back in 1913 to 2014 and still going on consistent basis.The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest award in Indian cinema given annually at the National film Awards function. 

why this award and for what ?

The government of India started a new National Film Award in the year 1969 knows as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award,in the centenary birth year of Dadasaheb Phalke who is also knows as "the father of Indian cinema" so to honor Dhundiraj Govind Phalke ( 1870--1944) this most prestigious and coveted award is named after him.

This award is given in the category of "Indian Cinema" as "the life time achievement" and for "the outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema."

What is given in Award  

This award if given by a committee of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry who recommend the name of the person to be honored with the award.It comprises of a Swarna Kamal ( Golden Lotus ) medallion,a shawl and a cash prize of  1,000,000.Till 2013 this award has been given to 45 personalities.
