Lieutenant Governors are in charge of a Union Territory. He/she is given almost the same powers as chief ministers have over their states. The 3 union territories of India are Delhi, Pondicherry and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Lieutenant-governors hold the same rank as a governor of a state in the list of precedence. Delhi and Pondicherry have a measure of self-government with an elected legislature and cabinet- hence the role of the Lieutenant-Governor in those territories is more akin to that of a state governor. The other 4 territories have an administrator appointed, who is an Indian Administrative Service officer.

Line of Control : : It divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

 

Durand Line : :  The line demarcating the boundaries of India and Afghanistan. It was drawn up in 1896 by the Foreign Secretary of (British) India Sir Henry Mortimer Durand. This poorly marked line is approximately 2,640 kilometers (1,640.42 mile) long.

 

 Inter-Entity Boundary Line : : (IEBL) divides Bosnia and Herzegovina into two entities, the Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The total length of the Inter-Entity Boundary Line is 1,080 km.

 

Hindenburg Line : : The boundary dividing Germany and Poland, the Germans retreated to this line in 1917 during World War I.

 

Mason-Dixon Line : : It is  line of demarcation between four states in the United State.

 

Marginal Line : : It is 320 km long line of fortification on the Russia-Finland border drawn up by General Mannerheim.

 

Macmahon Line  :: The line drawn up by Sir Henry MacMahon, demarcating the frontier of India and China. China did not recognize the MacMahon line and crossed it in 1962.

 

Order-Neisse Line  :: The border between Poland and Germany, running along the Order and Neisse rivers, adopted at the Poland Conference (Aug 1945) after World War II.

 

Radcliffe Line  :: It was named after its architect, Sir Cyril Radcliffe, who as chairman of the Border Commissions demarcating the boudary between India and Pakistan and was announced on 17 August 1947.

 

Siegfried Line :: The line of fortification drawn up by Germany on its border with France.

 

Maginot line:: It was built by France on its eastern border between World War I and World War II. The Maginot line was designed to stop any future invasion by Germany, but it was never completed. In World War II, the Germans conquered France by going around the Maginot line to the north.

 

17th Parallel north :: The line which defines the boundary between North Vietnam and south Vietnam established by the Geneva Accords of 1954 before the two were united in the year 1976  following  the surrender of the South Vietnamese government.
